Children from the Fichtenstrasse daycare center visit the Liz Mohn Foundation

Last week, the Liz Mohn Foundation opened its doors to some 20 children and their teachers from the Fichtenstrasse municipal daycare center in Gütersloh. The center’s project “This Is How the World Sounds – Music Connects and Knows No Borders” is among the 14 initiatives throughout Germany that the Liz Mohn Foundation chose to fund as part of its 2023 Cultural Diversity With Music initiative. The project is now in its implementation phase.

One special highlight of the visit: the young visitors’ delightful singing. Their performances of the songs “Hey, Hello, Bonjour,” “Ich brauche kein Orchester” (I Don’t Need an Orchestra) and “Anders als du” (Different Than You) enchanted the foundation’s employees. Afterwards, everyone in attendance learned more about the other activities the center is carrying out as part of the project “This Is How the World Sounds – Music Connects and Knows No Borders.” The children’s creative diversity and talent was evident, thanks to the self-made instruments they presented to the audience.

Every week, the children become acquainted with instruments, dances and musical works from different cultures and languages, thereby discovering that making music and dancing is possible in any language. The youngsters’ parents and grandparents also participate in the project by introducing dances, musical works or instruments from their native culture.

Through its Cultural Diversity With Music initiative, the Liz Mohn Foundation identifies exemplary projects throughout Germany that promote cultural and social participation among young people. In the selected projects, young people from different backgrounds are given the chance to participate in culture and understand each other better, while experiencing a sense of belonging and community. In 2023, the foundation provided funding to 14 initiatives throughout Germany, awarding each initiative up to €7,500.
