The Liz Mohn Foundation presented the contents of the bilingual book in German and English, with vivid illustrations, at the “9th Gütersloh Vesperkirche” as a quiz for the audience to guess along. The week-long event at the Martin Luther Church in the city center of Gütersloh creates an open meeting place that combines shared meals, social support, community, and educational and cultural offerings.
Matthias Meis, Vice-Chairman of the Board, and Sanny Pulka, Project Manager at the Liz Mohn Foundation, presented some of the surprising facts and figures from the book to an interested audience as part of the Vesperkirche evening program. Visitors gathered at tables to form spontaneous quiz groups to correctly answer questions about global realities of life. How many people speak Portuguese as their native language? And how many live in cities? The audience engaged in lively discussion on many categories before the answers left them amazed (Portuguese: 3 out of 100, urban population: 57 out of 100). No one went home that evening without having learned something interesting.
The Liz Mohn Foundation was also able to win over two state centers for political education for a special edition of “The Global Village of 100 People”: The state centers in Berlin and Hessen have ordered their own print run of 1,000 copies, which will be added to their publication catalogs in the course of the year. “We are delighted to be able to reach even more people with our content in this way and to strengthen the debate on global developments,” says Matthias Meis, Vice-Chairman of the Liz Mohn Foundation.
“The Global Village of 100 People,” published by Verlag Bertelsmann Stiftung, is still available in bookshops. Peek inside the book.
